About Chair

The Jallianwala Bagh Chair was established at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar in 2022 to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre (1919) and honor the innocent Indians killed by the British Government. Its primary objective is to conduct comprehensive research on the Massacre within the broader context of India's struggle for freedom. Since its inception, the Chair has completed Punjab Government project to verify the victims of the massacre and published its findings in a book titled Re-Visiting the Martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre (GNDU, Amritsar, 2024) and also published 09 Research Articles. It has organized 03 national-level seminars, and the Chairperson has delivered 27 invited lectures at various universities, colleges, schools, and public venues to raise awareness about the mindset behind the Massacre and its impact on India's freedom struggle. Currently, the Chair is recording the voices of the victims' families. The Chair plans to initiate a series of lectures on the Massacre, featuring renowned scholars in the field, starting in September 2024.

Dr. Amandeep Bal

About Chairperson

Amandeep Bal retired as a Professor and Head of the Department of History at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Her areas of specialization and interest encompass the Indian National Movement, the Revolutionary Movement, Communitarian Politics and the Punjabi Diaspora. She has completed five research projects and published three books: A Nationalist Muslim in Colonial Punjab: Life and Times of Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew (Unistar, Chandigarh), Re-imagining Jallianwala Bagh Massacre (1919) Centennial Commemoration (ed., 2020, GNDU, Amritsar), and Re-visiting the Martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre (GNDU, Amritsar, 2024). Additionally, she served as the editor of the Journal of Regional History at GNDU, Amritsar (2017-18), and Salahiyat at the South Asia Research Centre (April 2023)
