Research Activities
The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences was established in 1995 at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar with a clear vision to produce trained professionals to meet the ever-growing demand in Pharmaceutical Industry and Academia. The Department is recognized by Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) and All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. The department is enriched with highly qualified faculty and is presently running Bachelor of Pharmacy and Masters of Pharmacy courses in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical chemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy and Ph.D course in all disciplines. The department is well equipped with state of the art laboratories in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical chemistry, Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy sections. The infrastructure available makes the department a conducive place for academic learning that provides students with quality education in a clean and comfortable environment. In last few years, more than 250 research papers have been published and presented at various national and international conference chairs. The department is working towards becoming a center of excellence in Pharmaceutical Education and Research. The department has research collaborations with various national and international institutes. Number of research projects in the department has been funded by various scientific agencies including CSIR, DST, UGC, and AICTE. The department has very good placement record with students holding jobs in government sector, Academics and in industry as R & D scientists.

Presently, the department is engaged in following major Research area:
Pharmaceutics
- Pharmaceutics Dermaceticals, Targeted delivery of anti-HIV, anti-cancer drugs Modified Release Oral Dosage forms Bio-safety testing Development of spray drying based Pharmaceuticals Cell line and Pre-clinical study.
- Solving the problems of poor solubility and bioavailability of drugs using carrier approach such as Nanoemulsion, Microemulsion, Liposomes is in progress.
Pharmaceutical Chemistry
- Synthesis and optimisation of anticancer natural products.
- Lead optimisation, drug-biomolecule conjugation and asymmetric natural product synthesis, bioconjugation of active agents to cancer seeking biomolecules.
Pharmacology
- Neuropharmacology, explore learning and memory mechanisms, diabetic nephropathy
- Novel target sites and therapies for obesity, cardiac and renal failure, reno-protective agents against ischemia reperfusion injury in rats.
Pharmacognosy
- Standardizatio, Isolation, Characterization and Pharmacological screening (In vitro and In vivo) of medicinal plants, natural products and herbal formulations for antianxiety,
anticonvulsant, analgesics, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic and hepatoprotective activities.
